We are thrilled to share another one of our courses for the Program of Advanced Studies on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law: "Women & International Human Rights Law", taught by Viviana Waisman, Founder of GenEq - Founder and Director Emeritus, Women´s Link WorldWide; and Roberta Clarke, Commissioner and former President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

Come to Washington, D.C., and get the unique opportunity to explore the international human rights framework, and its application, to ensure human rights for women. Analyze the most emblematic cases, existing jurisprudence, and the role of different governmental and non-governmental actors in the process of creating and applying the normative framework inclusive of a gender perspective to ensure that States create and implement laws, policies, and plans aimed at protecting women from various forms of violence.

This course addresses the challenges of achieving the international legal protection of the human rights of women. It reviews how international and regional human rights conventions, especially the American Convention on Human Rights, have been applied to prevent, punish, and remedy the violations of women's rights in varying tribunals. It examines how the norm of the prohibition of all forms of discrimination against women has been applied, and how it might be more effectively applied in particular sectors. It explores how feminist theories, empirical data, and narratives might be used to expose women's experiences of injustices. The course also aims to go beyond a formalistic understanding of international legal obligations in order to examine different approaches to fostering compliance with the human rights of women in different cultures and religious traditions.
